Unfortunately, expectant mothers can pass on a deadly bacterium to their newborns during delivery. This bacterium, Group B Streptococcus, is present in the mother’s vagina and is passed to the newborn.

Group B Streptococcus can cause:

• death soon after birth

Newborns that survive can have:

• blindness
• deafness
• mental retardation
• cerebral palsy
