I got my first pair of glasses in grade four, my husband got glasses in grade five, and my son got his first pair at the ripe old age of seven.

That’s a pretty big expense every year, just in glasses alone, not to mention prescription sunglasses, contact lenses, reading glasses and even prescription swim goggles. To top it off, I have a whopping prescription of around -6.5, making glasses all the more expensive.

So, we got smart about buying glasses. Instead of paying the astronomical rates at our optometrist or an optical store, we started buying all of our prescription eyeglasses online.

Buying Prescription Glasses Online Tips

We’ve been buying glasses online since way back in 2009, and we’ve figured out a few helpful ordering glasses online tips and tricks to help save you money, and make sure you get great fitting glasses.

Make sure your prescription is recent

Almost all online glasses stores require that your prescription isn’t expired. The expiry date should be marked on your prescription. If it isn’t, then usually a prescription is only considered valid for two years for adults, and one year for kids.

Know your PD

Your Pupillary Distance (PD) is the distance between your pupils, and it’s usually measured in millimeters.

The good news is that most prescriptions include the PD. It’s it’s generally between 54 and 68 mm.

Tip! If you haven’t gotten your prescription yet, make sure that you ask your optometrist to include your PD on your prescription.

Measuring your own PD is pretty tricky. If your current prescription doesn’t have it, look through older prescriptions.

Get free shipping

Many online stores have great prices, but they ding you when it comes to shipping. I know from experience how incredibly frustrating it is to go through all the trouble of choosing frames, entering your prescription details, and then being surprised by a hefty shipping charge just before you place your order.

Instead, choose a company that offers free shipping from the get-go like DiscountGlasses.com, which offers free shipping on all orders.

Get the right frame size

The easiest way to get your right frame size is to find a pair that fit you well, and then check the measurements written on the inside arm of the frame. You can do this by using a pair you already own, or by trying a few on in store.

Try them on, but make sure returns are free!

The last time I ordered glasses, I had to order three frame styles before I found one that fit well and that I liked. Luckily, I was able to return all the ones that didn’t fit well for a free refund.

Because you can’t try before you buy with online stores, make absolutely sure that returns are free.

DiscountGlasses.com is especially great for this, as they offer a 365 day guarantee. To return, just contact customer service (by phone, email or fax), and request a return shipping label for your free return. It’s that easy!

We’ve been fans of buying glasses online since way back in 2009, when we ordered our first pair online. So, when DiscountGlasses.com reached out to us, we were excited to work with them.

I’ve been putting off getting some reading glasses for a while now. I’m not quite ready to go the full bifocal route yet, but I’ve been needing a pair of reading glasses. On top of that, I’ve been wanting a pair of folding sunglasses that fit easily in my pocket when we travel.

So, off I went to check out what DiscountGlasses.com had on offer.

I decided on a really cute pair of Country Club Reading Glasses from Eyefolds. See them here.

Second, I ordered a cool pair of mirrored, foldable browline Eyefolds Country Club sunglasses with UV400 polarized protection. See them here.

They came quickly, and were on my doorstep within a few days. Not bad!

Both pairs come with plastic hard case, and a travel pouch included.

What I really love is how easily they fold and unfold. Check this out!

How cute is that?

Here’s a peek at what the sunglasses look like.

I’m really loving them!

I also like that their sister site, DiscountContactLenses.com, has lowest prices guaranteed and the same 365 day shipping policy. Since hubby and I both wear contacts, we’ll definitely be checking that out!

You are so right about making sure they offer free returns. If you don’t then your glasses are that much more expensive. Have a wonderful day.
